Guest Posted March 23, 2007 lately my starter gear on the 7016 has been loosing its teeth pretty regularly. it is the cast iron 16 horse. i put on a new gear and it is stripped in just a few times of being used. i don't have the engine with the starter-generator but i could see how it would save me some time and money. when cranking it over it seems to hit a spot where it slightly backfires and wants the starter to go backward just for a split second. i suppose that's when the teeth get wiped off the gear. i have been helping keep my briggs dealer in business by buying starter gears. he doesn't have any ideas. these engines are too old for him i guess. at least we didn't have any snow that i would have needed the use of the blower this year or for the last couple of years. thats good. things are starting to turn a little green again down here finally. thanks, Gary
HubbardRA 19 Posted March 23, 2007 Gary, you may have a bad place on the flywheel gear, that is causing the starter gear teeth to break. I have heard of that happening on cars before. Also make sure that the bendix is not going too far in and smacking the flywheel hard, that may also cause a problem. Trying to backfire during turning usually indicates a malfunctioning compression release, or improper timing. These are just my ideas of things to look at.
