LesH 1 Posted March 25, 2007 I have an AC-T811 with the 11 HP Briggs, float type carburetor. Does not have a fuel pump, it is gravity feed to carb. I am replacing the lower crank seal, so first I drained the oil. I noticed that there was a lot of gas in the crankcase during draining. Anybody ever see that before?? I suppose the float valve needle stuck open and allowed gas to enter the oil during cranking?? Any comments?? Thanks!!!
firefoxz1 4 Posted March 25, 2007 Yes, main reason I've seen those seals leak. Usually when it's got that much gas in it the float is bad or there was dirt stuck in the needle assy., not just from cranking.
andrewk 0 Posted March 25, 2007 You can pressure test the carb with a thumb pump, to verify if it is sealing. Try cleaning it first, sometimes a little dirt gets in them and sticks them open. Hope this helps, Andrew
Morris 0 Posted March 26, 2007 I had an 11 hp I/C Briggs on a riding mower I picked up for $25. Same thing, crankcase full of gas. I drained, cleaned, filled with oil, put on a new starter, and it fired right up. And no gas ever got back in the crankcase as long as I owned it...never can tell sometimes. MrSteele 495 Posted March 26, 2007 Float type carbs are the best reason for fuel shut off valves. Shut the gas off every time, and the problem of gas in the crankcase never occurs. Gas will leak past the needle, into the manifold and down into the engine. Such has killed many engines when they were started with the gas in the oil pan.
