i was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a reason for the different colors of the rearend from the landlord 101 to the landlord 2010?. or was it just something they did?. i still havent figured out the years of theese 2 ol'buggers. 1965-66 or something like that. the 101

I haven't ever heard a real reason. But as someone who has went through several round of product consolidation and inventory adjustment, I suspect the reason was so that if all the transmissions coming out of that assembly step were black, then you didn't have to worry about which brand tractor was coming down the line when that transmission got to the tractor assembly line. That's just my guess.

I agree, they did the same with the engines. Early B-10 and Big Ten, yellow motors after that they were all black. I have also heard that the black dissipated heat better?

If I remember right, in front of the right axle there is a date cast into these trannies after about 64 or 65. Not really a for sure dating method 1, yours may not be the orginal tranny the tractor left the factory with, 2, it only tell you when the tranny was made, which may only be close to when the tractor was made.
