Did I do something bad ?????

While torquing down the lock nuts on the cone clutch on my 7117, I turned the motor. Did I turn it in correct direction or not? The reason I ask is because starter does not work as well as normal. It seems to labor then speeds up. The motor does start and runs normal. I have not put it to work yet. So did I damage starter, or the motor ? I have NOT checked the wiring yet.

Does the motor spin freely by hand, like normal?

Check and clean connections on battery and to the starter.

You can't damage the starter or the engine by turning it, regardless of which direction you turned it. It's no different than rotating the crankshaft by hand. If the starter wasn't dragging before, I would assume the cone clutch is not adjusted correctly. When disengaged, there is a brake to stop the PTO pulley from turning. If the clutch isn't adjusted properly, the cone could be dragging on the hub when the lever is in the disengaged position.

Thanks for the quick responses. I can not easily reach some part of motor to try turning it by hand. I suspected connections, but have to raise motor to get to starter connections. Battery connections, I redid. and ground connection is good as well. Cone clutch. I really think this is problem. I'm having a great deal of difficulty in getting this to release properly.. Probably because I keep trying to move pulleys. I did not know it had a brake. I'll readjust linkeage. I think that is problem.

It is cone clutch that is causing problems. I had it all apart, put a new spring in and the new snap ring. I did not replace bearings the feel smooth.I also have new cap with new lining.New key and locknut.Someone mentioned new and old style cone clutches. If so what was difference?

Is the bearing wore where it fits over the drivenshaft. They put a brass lining in these. check to see the fit of the bearing.

I did not feel any movement when I slid it on shaft. I'm thinking it has something to do with the part that actually disengages clutch
