4040 Battery Cover

Recommended Posts

As I've cooked a couple batteries in the past few years decided to make me one of those heat shield covers today. Had these pieces of alm plate drug home YEars ago, and 4 broken rubber seat mounts I just knew hadda be worth keepping when I replace them earlier this winter on the LL

cut what I wantted then rolled the edge under 1/2". Drill press vise worked good as I could get my bend started past 90 degrees.

rubber bumpers mounted

did have to buy 2 wing nuts and a piece of 1/4" all thread for holddowns.

I like the rubber bumper idea, think I'll copy your idea but open front and rear and close sides as I use side post connections

I used a piece of 12" square corrigated galvinised sheeting and tacked 3 washers to it as spacers and used the holes through the washers to run hose clamps through and mounted it directly to the muffler. The results were it was suspended about an inch off the muffler well above the batt. for easy access. Much cooler on the bat. now. Looks very nice Marty. These bats really need some protection. You can ruin a good bat. in a hurry with all that direct heat.

it doesn't show up too good Marty, but if you look close in the 3rd picture on the right you can see where I ground into the edge about 3/8's deep. this point sits on the side post non-cunductive part sticking out of the battery. Think side post use would work fine as is. Not sure which way one might get better air flow across the top of the battery. Dave, I thought about something like that but was looking at the picture in the parts book and decided it sat down on the battery so hopefully it'll be good.

Neat thinking and up to your usual high standards for innovation and construction. ^ Carry on,

I looked at the third pic and this time I saw the cut outs and can see them in pic four also. should have known you would have allowed for that. Dave's heat shield on the muffler would work also, my 620's have factory installed shields on the mufflers. on has asbestos between shield and the muffler and the other has two layers with air space. the 616 has no shielding. so I think I'll do both on the 616.

Marty, It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures, but the battery terminals look to be close to the bottom of the aluminum. If the positive terminal worked itself loose from the battery post, it might walk up and touch the aluminum and create a short. I'd look into putting on those insulated plastic covers over the terminals and posts or maybe just cut a piece of non-conductive material (i.e. hardboard, plywood, rubber, or something) and use the four rubber bumpers to hold it onto the bottom of the aluminum. Then you wouldn't have to worry.

Good thought Steven. have about 3.8 " clearance, never thought about the terminal working itself loose, though I've had it happen, Thanks.
