MPH 12 Posted April 9, 2007 Got the tractor this morning I went after the other day My yard rake hitch works pretty good for moving tractors First thing I did was pulled the rear hitch, both ends welded together with a pinto hitch. the rear wt is rusted in and I knew I'd break my shins on it in no time. Then I found out the wireing was all missing to the S/G so I wired that up. Checked the oil, which I could hardly see so pulled the plug and let drain cold, then put the pretty clean stuff I drained outta the 3314 in through a paper filter, rigged up a gas tank, jumped a battery off the bench as I don't have any extras, found good spark, big suprize as the point cover was sitting in the battery box all this time, added gas and it fired right off. Smokes some but runs real nice. Drained the used oil out after warmed up good. Put a pulley on the tranny, input shaft turns but the shift rod is real stiff forward and backward and won't go into any gear. Decided to bring in this Model W tranny believing with the quick once ove I gave it several years ago all I needed to was change the shift rod. Looking close, guess all I have is spare inside parts, maybe. The drive shaft is on the opisite side and no brake shaft sticking out Guess my morning project will be to tear down the tranny and see what I see Got the tranny out this morning, no wonder it wouldn't shift gears, pretty rusted up. Mightta had a cup of grease in it, from the smell of it I think I'm safe in saying Simplicity put it in there back in '66, which is what's cast into the tranny housing. Good news is I believe I can swap what I need into the Model W tranny that even has tight axle tube bearings. ordered new seals this morning figuring even tight seals at 40 years old wont last long, maybe I'll have one that don't leak ^ ^ Stronly incourage anyone with a spare sitting around to fill it with oil to the top. Might be the frost-thaw up here that contributes to rust inside, but it be a good place to store some ole engine drain oil anyway sm02 Had some good progress today even with a LOT of time cleaning. Thinking before I tear down another one I'm gonna add about 2 qts of desiel fuel, run around the driveway a couple times so it drains out better, then may put straight desiel in and run it a min or two just to save a lot of cleanning time. That OLD tranny grease sure does smell bad. here's the model W in parts pile If you remember to back off the these set screws, you really don't need a bigger hammer B) rust buildup like this may be the cause of other peoples shifting problems, this is the good one One didn't make enough parts so I spread the second one out sm01 Shot of the rust around the shifting parts in the "clean" one After getting the brake shaft outta the Big Ten tranny and the gears from the model W put on it , the bearing for that shaft move into the model W, swapped the input shaft bearing from case to cover so the shaft can come out the right side I got started putting things back together. Decided to coat all the upper parts with marine grease as I put it together, rolled ProLong into all the bearings. Only concern I have is if the seal on the brake shaft will last as it has a ring of rust pitting on it. Maybe I can leave the seal out a little. Got it what I'm calling done for now. Gonna run it awhile and see what all develops to fix. Know the seal on the pulley side of the BGB leaks, tried truning the bushing it ride on around but that didn't help none. Almost put the tranny in Model W orange for my own ugly betty. but it was so close to paintable clean I turned it black Here it sits out the shop door, on it's own power Took it for a short ride back around the semi van, almost got stuck in 1/2" of mud. Think I'll dig up a set of wts. Besides, they'll cover up the unpainted rims.:p

firefoxz1 4 Posted April 9, 2007 That is one clean looking tractor. With the two trannies I'm sure you'll have enough parts to get it going. This is the most tractor time I've seen you doing in some timedOd:D:D.

MPH 12 Posted April 9, 2007 Being as tractor greedy as I am, when I find one up here I don't look them over very close before I load 'em up. I too thought this one was in pretty nice shape til I got it in yesterday only to learn most of the painting was done right over the grease and dirt. Oh well, work it til I get a pressure washer then it should peel off easy:D
