Pitman arm removal (63-64 Landlord )

Recommended Posts

Hi, first time posting a question so bare with me. I just picked up a 1964 Landlord, and am in the process of fixing some things. I have a lot of play in the steering and traced it down under the battery to the 2 steering gears. Seems that previous owners didn't bother greasing these two shafts thereby wearing out their housings. I understand this is a common problem and plan on having a bushings made. I can't seem to remove the pitman arm under the tractor that connects to the larger steering gear. Regular style puller won't work. Is there a special puller to remove this from the shaft? I noticed two short studs on the pitman arm with nuts. Do these have anything to do with removal? Any ideas or suggestions on this would be appreciated. Thanks Chris

If memory serves me the arm is welded to the shaft there. You remove the gear from the shaft from the top and the shaft and pitmon falls out the bottom. As for the bushings, they are a stocked item at many of out sight sponsers.

Think that was on the later models Dave. My B-112 is that way but the 64LL and 725 the gear comes out with the shaft. The two set screws need to be removed and I believe there is a snap ring on the bottom of the shaft also. Then you can either get a pry bar between it and the tractor or dive it upward with a bar, being careful not to mushroom the end of the shaft. Looked in my AC book Dave, B-1 and early B-10 has the gear welded to the shaft and the Pittman arm set screwed on.

Chris, You may want to get the B-series service and Parts manuals.

Chris, I had the same problem on my '64 Landlord. On mine both the shaft and the housing were wornXX(. With the shaft there was no easy way to repair as is welded to the gear. Instead I ended up retrofitting to a steering mechanism from a little bit newer Landlord. The advantage of the newer steering mechanism is there are bushings and needle bearings already installed. There is also a means of adjusting the gear clearance. If I remember right, if you do this you need to get the whole assembly from the steering wheel shaft down to the steering gear assembly because the yokes were reverse (again, if I remember correctly) compared to the old style. The pitman arm does come off the shaft but I definitely had to use some "gentle"}:) persuasion on mine. I believe it is just a set screw (and rust on mine) holding pitman to shaft. I used a pickle fork on mine after removing some of the housing mount bolts to give clearance. PM if you have questions about my retrofit. Kraig

Thanks everyone. I checked the larger gear with the pitman arm attached and there was actually very minimal wear in it. The housing of the other (small) gear was really badly egg shaped, so I took it to a local shop where i am having it bored and a new bushing installed. Luckily the shaft itself wasn't wore. Hopefully that will last for another 40 years.
