Can anyone tell me what kind of engine swaps they have tried on these and which one would be the best engine. The old Kholer engine is tired and every one I have talked to around here hasn't had good luck rebuilding them and holding together very long.

Go Briggs! Any size you can find.

I put a 16HP single briggs in my 917 and love it. Lots of power and easy on gas.

Thanks, I was leaning towards the briggs but I didn't know which size or style would bolt in better.?

Here is the Briggs that would fit in. It is a 16HP engine. Model 326437 Type 0649-01

If you swap in a Briggs you'll need a different driveshaft, I have several, and you can sell the kohler one.

And I think you also need to change key switches.

I belive the drive shaft is the same, but the coupler that bolts on the engine is different. no?

Yep your gonna have to rewire it completely. Not too hard though.

When I swapped in the briggs, I used a wiring harness from the donor 16hp briggs tractor (3416H). I used a S/G style charging/starting system so I also had to mount the regulator. The kohler driveshaft was about an inch too short so I made some spacers to make up the difference.
