cahickm2 0 Posted April 14, 2007 I brought home the simplicity rotocul rototiller from my dads house and I was trying to get it to run today. I pulled the plug and looked to see if it hard spark. Nope, but when I grabbed the spark plug wire terminal it sahocked me. I changed the plug still no spark. Change the spark plug wire terminal and still nothing....Anynone have any ideas? AllisPhreak 0 Posted April 14, 2007 Sounds like either the magneto or the points are defective. Measure the resistance of both sides of the magneto. Neither side of the coil (magneto) should be a dead short, nor should the resistance be over 100 Ohms. If the Magneto checks out OK, then your only other alternative is the points. They may be incorrectly gapped. Because you got shocked is no indication of the strength of the Magneto.
cahickm2 0 Posted April 14, 2007 problem is, I have no clue where the points are to check them. Its an old briggs 5hp model 130****. How far should the mageneto be from the flywheel?
gregc 3 Posted April 14, 2007 Armature air gap = .010 - .014 If it has points and condenser they are under a cover under the flywheel.
ka9bxg 3 Posted April 14, 2007 More than likely the points are dirty and they are beind the cover. On another tiller that I have I changed the coil over to the electronic type and it starts much better and no problems with cleaning points.I have one of those also.I do not have the model number on mine.I would like to get a manual for it but can not get it with out the model number,Does anybody have this number. I need to repair things that someone has changed.Bob
cahickm2 0 Posted April 14, 2007 thats it paul. Only mine has extenisions on it. Instead of two sets of tines it has six. Greg, when you said under the flywheel, do you mean behind it?
cahickm2 0 Posted April 15, 2007 When I adjust the points what should the gap be at its widest? .020? Seems like a lot of work just to get to the points so I want to get it right the first time.
