Morris 0 Posted April 15, 2007 All, I finally had some time to tear back into the 23D on my Toro Whirlwind and got it fired up and purring like a kitten! There were several posts recently on some 23D issues and I wanted to work on this one as a sort of trial balloon before tackling the AC B-1, happy to report 100% success. I had no spark on this thing, and was debating going to a S/G with battery ignition, but decided to try the electronic ignition module (universal). One of the advertisers on eBay for these parts lives just across county from me, so I called him (Carl Nielsen, an awfully nice guy, and very helpful) and he invited me over and sold me the kit and about an hour later it was running...This pic shows how I mounted it... GWGAllisfan 159 Posted April 15, 2007 That's interesting, yours has the two leg coil, like on the later numerical series engines. Glad you got it to work. I'm still fighting mine.
Roy 0 Posted April 15, 2007 Nice installation. ^ You shouldn't have a heat related module failure with it mounted inside the blower housing.
Morris 0 Posted April 15, 2007 Thanks Roy. I was thinking "cool and dry" when figuring out a place to mount it, so that plate behind the flywheel was obvious. Oh, by the way, I think I found the reason for the initial failure. I noticed a good film of oil all over the points and condenser last time I had the cover open, suspect bushing/grommet/seal has sprung a leak. Randy, I was wondering about that myself...I read your posts earlier and others' and couldn't quite figure out what the 3-leg coil was, as I had this one on mine. Wonder if it's original?? John_RI 8 Posted April 16, 2007 Nice machine! Are those twin disc clutches? How'bout some more pictures? John
Morris 0 Posted April 17, 2007 John, not sure about the clutches, don't really know enough about them to make a guess. I did find a manual online at Toro and it details how to adjust the clutch and shift mech. You adjust your ground speed by moving the belt to different size pulleys. This is the more pricey version which includes reverse, a number of them didn't. Comes in handy when you have to pull it back, this thing weighs somewhere around 300. Has solid tires, not inflatables. I just got a decent air compressor and some tools, including a paint sprayer, so I'm thinking I'll cut my painting teeth on this before I try the Allis. Ok, here's a few more pics... Chris727 2,148 Posted April 17, 2007 Until yours I had never seen a two leg coil on the 23D. Is it possible that your engine was replaced with a 243431 Briggs 10hp? It is always possible that sometook the flywheel, and the aluminum mount and coil off of a 10hp and put it on the 9 but I don't think the crank on a 23 has the correct keyway for the flywheel key that matches that flywheel. Morris 0 Posted April 17, 2007 That's a good question, Chris. If you look in the next to last pic above, you will see the place where the number plate is supposed to be, but it's missing. So I've had a time trying to figure out what I've got. I went to Briggs' site and pored through lots of manuals, and the one that matched mine closest was the 23-D series. I don't think this is a repower, but the Toro manual didn't specify which engine it came with. Hmmmm, now I need to go back to the Briggs site and look some more...ok, just checked, but no, it's not the 243431. One of those engines is sitting for sale at the local Western Auto in town, and I looked it over a few days ago..similar but different. Mine is a bigger engine...Experts, any other means I can use to correctly identify the engine?
ZippoVarga 75 Posted April 17, 2007 I have a new 23D coil i'll take a picture of tomorrow morning and post in the afternoon some time. I mess with too many to remember 100% weather it's a two or a three leg coil.
Chris727 2,148 Posted April 18, 2007 The 23D is technically a smaller engine than the 243431. They are physically the same dimensions, same head bolt pattern, etc. The 243431 has a larger bore.
