Those are good machines. I like the Hi-Lo. My first simplicity was a 707 and I had a blast with it. Good tractor until the engine blew up.:Owah:(!yell

To bad the deck so rotted out, nice looking tractor otherwise. Looks like that little feller in the pic has his own mower anyway, take the deck off and he's got a ride about his size.sm01

looks good. the one i just picked up yesterday has the same HI-LO set up as yours. but yours is in a whole lot better looking shape. funny thou, mine was sunk in the dirt next to the landlord and blue john deere. but yet the decks are solid on the simplicty's and the jd deck is rotted bad.

the little guy in the 1st pic is my 4 year old Dalton. He helps me turn....errr....lose wrenches :D Tell ya what, that deck was SHOT :( I took it off, expecting to patch it, and my gosh, i can't believe the center spindle stayed on the deck!! Pix in another post, coming up after this one. You guys are right about this mower, she's a BLAST and runs like a top. The dual hi-lo takes some getting used to, but it's seriously growing on me :D

Those are great tractors. It isn't really "dual hi-lo's". The middle lever is for the trans - they are only a 2 speed - hi and lo gear. The lever to the right sticking out of the fender is the hi and lo range selector - that planetary gear set that is part of the pulley at the trans input. It was a dealer or owner installed kit. It is needed for using a snowblower in anything but very light snow. Also helps when the lawn gets out of hand and you end up cutting down a hayfield - put it in low range and let it chew through the heavy stuff. The rope start is pretty common. Check out your ID tag on the rear fender - it should identify it as deluxe model due to your tire size, but only manual start - electric start was an option from the factory, or dealer installed as a kit. A new deck shell is still available from Simplicity - those small deck cut great. Have fun with it! Tim

Tim ~ Thanx for the information! I downloaded some manuals for it, but haven't actually "looked" at them or printed them out just yet. Something i'm going to do here after dinner, and see if i can figure out what year it is for sure. Here's the information off the back tag: Serial # 008113 Standard Mfg. # 990373 Deluxe Mfg. # 990374 Elec start Mfg. # 990375 I actually like the "pull-start only" but the recoil spring is getting fairly worn, as it doesn't like to rewind the pull rope on it's own :(

That would make it a 990374, assuming that is the right engine. Post your engine numbers - I think it should be a 170702 0123 66XXXXXX. I don't have my numbers in front of me. All of the 707's I have and have seen that have what could be considered the original engine have been date coded from 1966, but Simplicity didn't use regular model years. I have factory literature that calls the 707's 1966 and 1967 models. Same is true for the 717 Broadmoor - there are papers that refer to it as a 1967, and some as a 1968. As close as all the early Broadmoors are to each other, any change was likely just a running change, because none were so large that production would have stopped. If anything, between the 707 and 717, the only difference is the engine model and the ID decals. The 717 got the one piece flo-jet carb, and a balancer system. Tim

Nice tractor. I had the HI/LO set up on a Yeoman. Worked great. I took it off with plans on istalling it on my 717 but ended up installing a three speed trans instead. I love that BEAM CLAMP pull start handle.:D Tom

numbers off original engine shroud: Model: 170702 Type: 0123-01 Code: 6703291 I say "original" shroud, as the previous owner said it had a new short block installed not too long before he got it, and they used the original tin. Like that clamp huh? LOL.....i swapped that "high dollar" clamp out for a regular rubber pull start handle off an old boat engine i had out back :D

That is actually a pretty late 707 by the engine code - I have only ever seen 1966 date codes, so that goes to show that Simplicity just changed models when they felt like it. Those numbers are correct, and the date is within factory literature, so I would say it is original. The 707 my father bought used in 1976 from the local dealer has a serial of 3986, and the engine date code is from September of 1966, so that all seems reasonable. Tim
