Mean_LiL_Allis 0 Posted April 15, 2007 I want to get the grill and the steering wheel of my B112 re-chromed. Where do I go ?Would chrome powder coat work? Has anyone had this done? How do they keep from messing up the plastic coat on the steering wheel?
RenegadeJ 0 Posted April 15, 2007 I had the chrome on my B-212 re-chromed and it turned out pretty nice. If you check the phone book for you area and find an auto bumper re-chrome shop they should be able to do it for you. It is a little pricey but I like the result. Sure makes it look nice. If I remember right is was 90 bucks for the grill side panels and the grill.
wilm169 1 Posted April 15, 2007 I have a cousin that works in a nickle plating shop, will that shine up as good as chrome?
Roy 0 Posted April 15, 2007 "will that shine up as good as chrome?" Yes but color will be slightly different.
Paul_B 0 Posted April 15, 2007 quote:Originally posted by wilm169 I have a cousin that works in a nickle plating shop, will that shine up as good as chrome? Nickel plating is done just before the chrome plating. Nickel is what gives chrome plated objects their color. Chrome is like a clear coat for the nickel. As said before their will be a difference in appearance.
Tom_Byrne 0 Posted April 15, 2007 MY TWO CENTS: I know I'm a strange one, butI actually like nickel better than chrome. It has a different kind of look and shine to it. I believe all the car makers used nickel plating until the mid 1930's.
Chris727 2,136 Posted April 16, 2007 I doubt they can chrome the steering wheel. Last time I had chrome work estimated they explained that it is a "total immersion" process where the entire part must be dipped, From new the steering wheels are chromed before the plastic coating is applied. bob1959 0 Posted April 16, 2007 If I'm not mistaken you can chrome the steering wheel because chrome will only stick to the metal. With the antique cars I think that we have had parts chrome that had plastic attached. the problem may be in the buffing of the nickel before final coating. Roy 0 Posted April 16, 2007 The plastic/steering wheel rim can be wrapped with black tape to protect it from the plating solution. As stated above the chrome will not adhere to tape or plastic. Requires a conductive material for the chrome electroplating process to work.
