Morris 0 Posted April 18, 2007 With the comments on my previous post (23-D Success!!) I heard from a couple of you who indicated my engine had the two-leg coil as opposed to a three-leg, meaning this might not be a 23-D. The ID plate is missing from this engine, so I ID'd it by downloading and poring over old Briggs' manuals. This is on an old Toro Whirlwind commercial mower. But if it's not a 23-D, can anyone help ID this engine? Here's some more pics. I thought at first it might be a 23FB, but the points and condenser are like the 23-D. Engine appears original and unmessed with. The black paint I put on (Rustoleum) to stave off rust that was starting on the sheet metal, but the paint matched the rest of the mower. Any and all comments welcome... Chris727 2,136 Posted April 18, 2007 The 3 screw carb would be original to the 23D or the 230000 model series but could have been swapped over to a new 10hp (243431) shortblock at some point. The 10hp uses the same points as the 9hp. Those points were used all the way up to the 16hp. What type of breather does it have? Is it the little round can or is it off of the valve cover behind the carburetor. It also appears that this is an engine with ball bearings. As far as I know all of the 10's had them, while only the 23's with a "B" in the model # had them.
D-17_Dave 12 Posted April 18, 2007 New style crankcase breather behind the carb. indicares a numbered series instead of a number/letter series. I'd say it's a 243431 with the old style carb. off the orriginal 23d on it.
Morris 0 Posted April 18, 2007 You may be right, Dave and Chris. When I looked up the 243431 I didn't see an exact manual for that engine, but did see one with a similar number but that was a smaller engine. (I was looking on the Briggs' site for old manuals.) The breather tube is behind the carb, and not the little can like on my B-1. As I recall the oil bath air cleaner was one I put on; when I bought it had the round paper-type. Carb is old, though, as far as I can tell. One clue I neglected earlier, it does appear someone has modified the carb linkage; it has a homemade mount for the throttle cable attached to the old points/condenser cover. That would makes sense if someone made a swap in some way. Thanks for the help, guys...
