wadem4acs
What are the good and bad points on a 919? It has the orginal 19hp Kohler motor in it? I heard they may have had problems, or was that just the 17hp motors? Thx, Wade
RayS
If it is a series II it is better than the series I. I believe that the series II held more oil.

wadem4acs
I know the tractor itself is good, but I had heard horror storys on the KT motors, along the line of the oil pressure problems.
bigdog46
The KT motors are good if they are maintained properly. The oil level must be kept at the recommended level on the dipstick and the air flow must not be restricted to the cooling fins around the cylinders. Many of the KT engines have broken a connecting rod because of a mouse nest in the front shroud that blocked air flow to the cylinder fins and caused the engine to overheat. Also many engines have broken a rod due to low oil level. I have a 1982 Simplicity 7117 with the series 1 engine that I have used to cut approx. 3 acres each week during the mowing season and also used it to till mine and the neighbors garden. In the winter season, I used it to push snow. I have never had any problems with it even though it have several hundreds of hours use. I prefer the twin cylinder Kohler engines myself as they run much smoother that the single cylinders.
MikeES
GB pretty much covered it. Keep them clean and good oil and they are as good as any engine. The series I engines had some problems running on side hills because of lack of lubrication. The series II engines had a full pressure lube and solved the problem. The biggest problem is that the KTs only hold 1-1/3 quarts of oil. The later KT and Magnums with oil filters hold about 1-1/2 with the large oil filter. So you can't let the oil get low. I have a 1980 serier I KT17 and a 1985 series II that run just great. I also have a stock M20 (same as a KT19) in a pulling tractor, and the tractor wins against modifieds.
