bgb seal

Today i took my tractor arpart. The seal on the pto side of the bgb was leaking. When I rebuilt the bgb the simplicity dealer didnt have any of the seals in stock (118117). Well the old seal was bad and should have been replaced. I popped the old seal out and attempted to put the new seal on. It doesnt seem like it wants to go on. It has a rubber ring with a spring wrapped around it on the inside. Do I have the take the bgb off and completely disassemble to put this seal in? or does the side plate hold it in place?

Any seal I've replaced has a metal housing around the outside that presses into housing around the shaft. I use about a double wrap of tin foil with a film on oil smeared on it on the shaft to protect the seal from being cut by the keyway. I drive them home with a deepwell socket or pipe so as to have presure on the entire seal rim at the same time.

mine has a metal housing also. Its brass colored. On the inside though is where i am talking about the spring thing. I tried to hammer is in with a deepwell socket but it didn't want to go. Its like the rubber on the inside is interfering.

The spring is what keeps a little presure on the rubber so it seals good, shouldn't affect it going in at all. As they are a real tight fit, because friction is all that holds them in, getting them started takes a little TLC. If you get it cocked in the hole you can mess up the new seal, been there done that. If you get one edge barely started, work your way around it til it's all going in, then tap it in evenly.
