firefoxz1 4 Posted April 21, 2007 Well I shouldn't have but I bid and won a B10 with 42" blade off e-bay for what I considered a good price, $101.50, s/n 019874. I have all Simplicities right now and know the line better. questions 1: am I right in this info early B10 = "Landlord" (black dash) with a 23d engine. big ten = Landlord 101 with 10HP 243??? engine. late B10 = 2010 with 10HP engine. When I pick it up I will take pics, but would like to get a handle on the early vs late so I know which it is. Can someone tell from this pic?
tanman722001 0 Posted April 21, 2007 Nice find.Yes you right on the break down from AC to Simplicity
ehertzfeld 1 Posted April 21, 2007 That could be a big ten or a late B10. Ugly Betty is an early B10. I have Kent's old big ten here, you can take a look at it tomorrow.
perry 1 Posted April 21, 2007 looks like a good tractor for the price.
GregB 972 Posted April 22, 2007 That was really not far from me. Was going to bid but, I have to many as it is now( DID I SAY THAT?) Need to get rid of parts, extra attachments etc. Great price, I think. Other than the frame fix. It looks complete, the rear fenders are actually still standing up. And lights to boot! Good luck with it. GregB Millersville, Pa
Scott Salmons 7 Posted April 22, 2007 My guess would be that it is a Big Ten, because of the yellow motor. From what I have seen on E-bay you could sell your lights and get your money back.
Willy 2 Posted April 22, 2007 Nice looking tractor, the seat even looks good from this angle. How is the engine?
firefoxz1 4 Posted April 22, 2007 My thoughts are the fenders are straight because it has armrests? Anything is fine with me, just wanted to know so I can tell when I get there. I have a decent spare frame if I feel like swapping it out but don't even know what it what it might take to get it running. If anything I still have ugly Betty's cousin (a green 2010) sitting here to combine with it. Should be able to make one good machine. Picking it up tomorrow. Killer_A-C 0 Posted April 22, 2007 Heck the lights are worth what you give for it.Another one resqueddOd
firefoxz1 4 Posted April 23, 2007 Well I picked it up today. It is an early B10 with a 23d engine. 23D 0129-02 37729 to be specific. It's dirty but not in that bad of shape except where the frames been either fixed or strengthened. Add said trans didn't work but it was just stiff from sitting and needed some persuasion to go into gear. At some time in it's past it was repainted thus the yellow engine I suppose. No real rust, must have been in a dirt floor barn or shed. The 42 in blade is complete with pins and lift bar, no deck or PTO mule drive though. Headlight bar. missing the spacers?? Dealer decal. The repair plates 3/16 or 1/4" steal. Back of the seat with the logo Condition of seat. The armrest suppose to go that far out to the side? It's ugly cousin which may be a parts donor? Forgot to mention, I took all the loose parts off for transport. Anybody have a 42"deck and drive assy?? Got it in Mount Joy so I guess I'll have to call her "Joy", just like I call the 725 "Detroit"
Killer_A-C 0 Posted April 23, 2007 I got a nice 42"deck if interested I can send pics. It will also be available at S/F.
gregc 3 Posted April 23, 2007 Great price for that tractor.^ Couple of things puzzle me though. The hood decals are like the Big Ten and late B-10 and the emblem on the back of the seat is the later one. What about the one on the grille, early or late? Engine should be yellow to start with. I believe if it was to be black the type would have been 0129-01.
Roy 0 Posted April 23, 2007 Nice tractor. The arm rests should sit square vertically & horizontally. Several reasons they sag to the side. One is bent tubing, next is the tubing pivoting down on the seat back bolts, and last is spreading of the vertical uprights that hold the seat back. I put a stretcher bar/plate on my B-1 to ensure the uprights stay vertical. It also helps keep the fenders positioned correctly. Carry on,
Killer_A-C 0 Posted April 23, 2007 Thats an early B10 grille and emblem Greg.
gregc 3 Posted April 23, 2007 Yeah, I could tell the grille was early just didn't know about the emblem.
firefoxz1 4 Posted April 23, 2007 Looks like it was gone over awhile ago very thoroughly. Probably everthing that needed replacing(seat) or fixed was done and like I said it was repainted. Sometime afterwards someone fixed or reinforced the frame. What I'm going to need more than a deck is the mid PTO assy. But a deck would be a good thing also. I'm going to clean it tomorrow and see what it really looks like, then see if I can get it running.
firefoxz1 4 Posted April 24, 2007 It ran:D, well it ran for about 30 seconds then it flooded out and gas started pouring out the carb:(. Looks like a carb cleaning is now in order. Good news is it really didn't smoke until it flooded out (black smoke). All I did was clean the points up and disconnected the key switch. A little more play time and I maybe driving it around:D:D. Did clean up the front some and looks like it may clean up half decent, no pics of that yet.
Kent 436 Posted April 24, 2007 BTW, an easy way to tell a Big Ten from a late B-10 is if the engine and tranny is painted yellow. Late B-10s and B-12s have black ones, while everything earlier was painted yellow. The hood decals on that one are NOT early B-10. Looks like someone may have mixed/matched some parts along the line, since that grille is early B-10... Is it a 243430 10HP engine or a 23D 9HP engine. Hard to tell but it looks like a 10HP to me. (4 bolt carb vs 3 bolt is an easy way to tell). Someone may have replaced the grille along the way...
ReedS 6 Posted April 24, 2007 Tom The frame repair is very typical of the early Round hoods, my 64 9hp LL has been repaired in the same area and I've seen others with the same type of repair. My guess is that the welds in this area were weak from the factory perhaps a design flaw ?
firefoxz1 4 Posted April 25, 2007 Kent: a 23D with the 3 bolt carb. Like I said it was repainted at one point and the seat and decals where replaced by what was available, I assume. Tractor looks like it was well kept for most of it's life, probably by original owner. It came from an estate sale so somewhere along the owner couldn't use it anymore and it just sat in a barn or open floor shed being neglected. If I get it running good I may transport to spring fling for my riding pleasure:D.
firefoxz1 4 Posted April 26, 2007 Well it runs now like it's only 4 years old not 44. Now for the a "DUH" story. After cleaning the carb I and reassembling everything I fired it up and only had to make a small adj on the main mixture. I shut it down with the key. Walked away for five minutes and came back to see if would refire, nothingC, I even tried a squirt of ether, nothing, now the DUH part, being it is a push button I could crank it but forgot to turn the key back onB):(!. Turned the key on and it fired up. Drove it around feels fine and trans worked flawlessly. Only thing I notice is the input shaft on the BGB feels loose when I wiggle it. tanman722001 0 Posted April 26, 2007 Been there done that before.LOL Glad you got it running and driving it.
Morris 0 Posted April 26, 2007 I have a portion of the mid PTO you need, I'm at work now and not 100% sure, but I think it is missing the lever section. I'll check and see if the rest is any good, give me a holler if you need it...
MPH 12 Posted April 28, 2007 After seeing the amount of rust build up in the upper part of my big Ten tranny that wouldn't go into any gear, you might want to flush yours then put new grease in it. glad you got it running good.
