Brian313 0 Posted April 26, 2007 I bought 2 sets of points for 2 seperate 12hp briggs engines 302431, a few weeks back. they both have about 2 hrs run time on them and are acting the same way from no spark to erratic to runs fine in a 10 min period. My question is (finally) there is a spacer between the lock nut and bracket, is that supposed to be fixed or free floating? The only old set of points I have it is stationary but they are 10 plus years old. One engine is mag fired and one is coil. Seems funny they ran fine before the "tune-up" Thanks
gregc 3 Posted April 26, 2007 Mount the breaker point assembly, then tighten adjustment screw until the locknut has pushed the ferrule as far as possible toward the head of the adjustment screw. This secures the adjustment screw firmly to the breaker point.
Brian313 0 Posted April 26, 2007 That's how I've done it before, I must be missing something obvious. I'll recheck it tommorrow night but by the time the nut hits the ferrel the points are open a quarter inch. I'm sure I'm making a mountian of an ant hill but I'll double check tommorrow. firefoxz1 4 Posted April 27, 2007 You mentioned points how about the condensors? I replace those more than points.
TerryZ 0 Posted April 27, 2007 If you are not too worried about keeping the tractors in true collector original condition then go Electronic! There are many different makers of electronic upgrades for these engines, just search the web.

There are many different makers of electronic upgrades for these engines, just search the web. Not at all worried about original, but points are points and to me should be simple. This morning before work I rechecked them. 20 thousandsth gap engine ran fine. The ferrel had 1/8 in floating space and the bracket to adjustment screw had 45 thousandsth gap. Bought a 3rd set of points on the way home tonight, installed and set, everything is snug and runs fine. The problem was the groove that holds the outside point contact is parallel to the engine. The one I replaced is at a 45Degree angle. i'll post the pics soon. Unfortunatly murphy thru in a chaffe in the wire when the points cover is installed. So I got sidetracked a little. And Frustrated.B):(!
