old_nodaker 0 Posted April 28, 2007 Recently aquired by me. Gas tank has two lines, one of which is plugged off. What was it for and was it important?
wilm169 1 Posted April 28, 2007 one is the pull side or flow line and the other is the return for the extra fuel from the pump.
Guest Posted April 29, 2007 Viewing the above picture the line on your left dumps return fuel into the near top of the tank. The line on the right is the supply line and pulls fuel from the near bottom of the tank. Many have blocked the return line off but this is not a good idea. Keeping it as the manufacture design it reduces the chance of vapor lock. I also like the idea that it circulates the fuel. In addition it's less stressful re the fuel pump. old_nodaker 0 Posted April 29, 2007 Thanks, and of course, one good answer leads to another good question: Why did they block the return line? I'd assume they must have caused some sort of problem. The more I think about this the more confused I get. Why would there be excess fuel to return? Doesn't the float shut off the supply? I know diesels have returns on them, don't think I've ever seen a gas one before though. Mine also has had an electric fuel pump added, right at the top of the tank. The thing that bothers me about that is as long as the key is on it runs. So either it's pumping gas into the crankcase, which is unlikely, or it runs but just doesn't pump when its up to pressure. Do they make pumps like that? Suggestion to site managers: Add a section for us new guys to come to to ask all our stupid questions so they'll all be in one place! eagle5473 0 Posted April 29, 2007 If you have an electric fuel pump I would definitly replace the return line, there is a simple "T" just at the carb for the supply line to return excess to the tank
