bpg 0 Posted May 1, 2007 Was checking out the noise coming from my gear box on the 3410 s and just as I moved it ahead 10 feet it made a weird noise and stopped moving . While the motor was still running , I lifted the seat up and a bit of oil was dripping from the gear box where the drive shaft goes in and none of the pulleys where turning off of the gear box. Is this a difficult repair ? do you look for a used gear box? or take it apart and get new parts? I havent looked into it to much but does anyone have an idea what I will be dealing with? I guess first things first , take it apart and see whats wrong. ( I never worked on the gear box before) looking for a bit of info thanks p.s. i pulled the plug for oil on the gear box and it looked clean with no metal shavings noticed.(if this means anything)
Willy 2 Posted May 1, 2007 BGB rebuild isn't to bad a job. Taking it off is a pain. If it was mine I would take it off,and check it out. If the gears and shafts are ok,a rebuild is cheap,if the gears are torn up,I would look for a replacement. MHO Advice is cheap so you should take it for what it's worth. MikeES 464 Posted May 1, 2007 You may be as lucky as a broken key. The RBTs are much easier to get at the BGB than the FDTs. So crawl under your tractor and turn the drive shaft and see if the input shaft to the BGB is turning or if the drive shaft yoke is spinning on the input shaft. If the input shaft not turning your work is right in front of you (probably a sheared key in the yoke). If the input is turning and the output pulleys are not than you will probably need to remove the BGB and open it up. While you are under there you can see the 4 bolts that hold the BGB (and the whole back of the tractor) to the front half of the tractor. Just remove them and split the tractor.
