Spraying and fertilizing lawn

Recommended Posts

When do you all spray and fertilize your lawns? What analysis do you like for general up keep? Do you like all in one fertilizer with weed and grub control or is it cheaper/better to do them with multiple passes? If so what kinds/types of spreaders/sprayers do you have the best luck with? How many times per year are these applications necessary to keep a weed free, deep green, thick, healthy lawn? Thanks all. Sean

Sean - Fertilizing, pest control, selection of turfgrass variety, etc., are all very much dependent on the specifics of your yard and your location. What works for a Club member in NY would likely be a disaster for another Club member in Florida or Nevada. Even within Missouri, there is quite a difference between the north and south areas of your state! Your best bet is to contact the local county Extension Service office - they can give you the info that matches the needs for your area. Tom

I hired out last year, but this year I decided to take over myself, because I was quite disatisfied with the service I recieved. In the spring and fall I use a liquid crabgrass preventer. for weeds I use a liquid weed killer with the content of 'ester' chemical. The stuff I get cost me $20 for a qaurt and will last me a year or so. Keep in mind I only have a half acre. I will apply this starting in spring and repeat every 6 weeks there after. For grass food I use a product called 'milorganite' which is a recycled product from the Milwaukee metro sewage district. I will apply this 2 or 3 times a year I really don't have a set schedule for this application. I have a basic 3 gallon hand held sprayer (for now) and a basic $20 wally world spreader.

By no means am I an expert, but here's what I do in NE Ohio. For the most part I follow the Scotts 4-step program. I buy either scotts or an off brand and have good results. In addition I apply Ironite once or twice in the year. Usually in the spring and/or fall. I don't care for liquid fertilizers. The granular stuff slowly disolves giving you a slower feeding. Golf courses will use a liquid, but they "spoon feed" the grass fertilizer as it needs it and will apply fertilizer as often as once a week. I use a scotts broadcast spreader and try to cover the grass as evenly as possible.
