Simplicity Landlord 101

Recommended Posts

Ed in CT
I am trying to help out an elderly aunt who has and loves to operate her '65 landlord. I noticed the right rear axle housing was cracked, now it has peeled back and renders the machine inoperable. My questions : This looks like cast iron can it be welded? Are parts available? If so where? I and she would appreciate any help. Thank you Ed in CT

any chance you can post a picture, Ed? both of the tractor and the peeled back part. Cast iron usually doesn't bend, it breaks. Also would help if you were able to post the manufacture # (Model #) off the sticker if that still exists. -Don

Sounds like a broken axle tube, most of these parts are still available, I think. Go to www.simplicitymfg.com to locate a Simplicity dealer in your area, you can also download a parts manual and get the # of the part you need. Or you could buy the part from one of the dealers that advertise on this website.

Ed, IMO, the easiest/cheapest fix is to swap in a whole used transmission that's in good shape... Those standard 3-speeds are plentiful and inexpensive.

OH, I think I misread things. On his profile page it says "member since 5/11" But that's apparently not same as PAYING member! So the tip is the lack of club member icon in posts? -Don

Don, Yup. If a person is a non paying member, the "Club Member" button is not displayed next to their screen names at their posts. Ed, I'm with Kent. It's easier to just swap em out. It's much easier, cheaper, and ensures that it won't break again. They're pretty easy to find on eBay. Occasionally, you can get those tractors (sometimes as "parts" tractor, sometimes complete.) for just 40-60 bucks on eBay. Interestingly, transmissions itself tend to sell for $150 or so on eBay. (Even though parts tractors has those on it and more)

Hello, Yankee Sales and Service in Woodstock would be your local dealer with the best knowledge of your tractor. There might be another closer but don't have the knowledge of the older tractors, or in my opinion, any people skills either. It does sound like a broken axle tube. Last I knew they were available new, and were about $100.00 (been awhile since a purchased one). Yankee Sales and Sevice is located right off of Rt. 169, and the phone number is 928-0341, ask for Calvin.
