steering gear

i have the spare steering assembly almost apart from the b-12. it will go into the big ten that is slowly being overhauled. the shaft that sticks up for the gear to sit on is frozen inside the gear. the C clip moves but is too far down in the saddle/gear to remove from the shaft. can i drive the shaft thru the saddle from the bottom? the bottom end of the shaft is threaded and the top end has a screwdriver slot. i am hoping that the shaft is straight, no steps on it. thought i'd ask before i destroy a good part.

Yes. It should come right out after taking the nut off and backing out the set screw. John

got it apart and cleaned up. put new bearings in it and did a paintjob on it. today it will go into the big ten. anyone know what kind of lube to put on the gear teeth, if any? i think most grease will hold dirt and crud in it and make a mess.
