17GTH-L

I have located a 17GTH-L for sale at $700. It starts, runs, mower engages, hydro moves it forward and back. It has set outdoors for 2 years that I know of. One front tire is flat. Is it worth the price?

How good does it run? These are some problem areas to look at: 1. Does it consume oil? 2. Was the engine kept clean (is it full of nests, grass, etc) 3. Does the hydro work correctly, hold speed, and hydraulic lift function properly? 4. Was the oil changed regularly? 5. Does the gearbox have excessive play between the meshing of the gears? If it runs good with no oil consumption and everything is very sound mechanically, I would say that is a fair price, many of the good 17GTH-Ls still go for over $1000 on ebay but they usually have an attachment with them like a tiller, etc.

If the engine's OK, it sounds like a good deal, all depends on the market in your area. The KT 17 Series 2 engines are OK if kept full of oil and grass kept off the intake screen; many have died for these reasons. Chris's questions are right on. If all answers are yes, I think you have a great deal. I picked up a 17GTH-L for $500 several years ago with a blown engine, but the tractor and deck had always been kept inside and except for the engine was in excellent condition. It's now a 16GTH-L.
