Roy 0 Posted May 17, 2007 The governor on the 11 hp Briggs generator I put into my B-1 was working like a direct throttle control with no governor action. I adjusted the governor lever per D-17's suggestion at Spring Fling. This resulted in excessive "hunting" and engine speed "lunging" (fast, slow, fast, slow, etc.) Today, after some looking and head scratching, I added a spring to the governor linkage. Solved the problem and works great! :) My magic wand was fantastic today. One of the deals where it will not get any better. Pictures are of the spring I added. Amazing what can be done with a piece of coat hanger wire (thanks Rod) and a spare spring from the parts bin. New governor spring: Bottom of the spring is attached to the governor lever arm. To make the day even better a neighbor gave me a good lawn tractor battery and generic small engine repair manual. I'm a happy camper. :):):)
MPH 12 Posted May 17, 2007 Not to spoil your happy day Roy, but I seem to recall Rod gave you those coat hanggers to be used for gas welding, he may want them back he sees you miss useing them.;) Good to see your thinking ' outside of the bubble' solved your problem. HubbardRA 19 Posted May 17, 2007 Roy, I won't penealize you for using one of my gift welding rods to fix your tractor. What I am wondering is where are the factory governor springs at? I don't see any springs but the one you added. I have made my own governor linkages many times. They all need a spring to work properly. In fact both of the tractors that I brought to Spring Fling had Hubbardized governor setups. The governor link on the 713S is also a piece of coat hanger, similar to what I gave you. Roy 0 Posted May 17, 2007 Marty, as you well know, sometimes it is necessary to use whatever material is available at the time. Was thinking of some of your "innovative" solutions while I was working on it. :) Rod, The stock governor spring is buried behind and at the bottom of the plate the throttle linkage and kill wire are attached to. Cannot reach it without removing the engine. Stock governor only has one spring. Remember, this is a generator engine. Note to all, "gift welding rods" equals coat hangers. :D
HubbardRA 19 Posted May 17, 2007 Painted steel coathangers, the best welding rods you can get for oxy-acetelyene gas welding.:D
