skunkhome 0 Posted May 21, 2007 I recently purchased a Simplicity 3414S with a Briggs 302431 motor. It is in good operating condition with good sheet metal but a horrid red paint job that makes it look like an IH. Last time I owned one of there types of tractors (a late B-10) was 35 years ago before I left home. Down here in the deep South you don't see many if any Allis or any other Simplicity built Garden tractors. There is a Simplicity dealer here but there is not a single Simplicity on his show room floor. I had tried him earlier on to try and get some leads on some old Simplicities but he was no help at all. I am certainly glad that I am finally getting my hands on one. I down loaded an owner's manual for the tractor but would like to have some more information about the motor. About all I can find out is that it is a 13 HP unit. Where can I find specifications like bore & stroke, spark plug, Gap etc. on these old pre '81 motors? Ketchamized 2 Posted May 22, 2007 Phil, This is the parts list for that motor: http://shop.briggsandstratton.com/BShopProductPage.asp?CatalogID=656F8AC4-B611-4BB3-95BF-A9C915B1275A&MECID=100&CategoryID=&lrid=&ProductID=56B2BC2C-283C-11D4-8886-00B0D0203414# You can click "View PDF" then when it opens using Acrobat Reader (www.adobe.com)... You can save the file to your computer. I didn't take a good look, but often that kind of information is here and there in the parts list. But, at least, the parts you need is definitely listed with a parts number, of which you probably need. For parts, you can try eBay. Use this formula as a search string: Briggs (part number). Good luck.
skunkhome 0 Posted May 22, 2007 Thanks a bunch Erick! That is great info that I immediately printed out and put in my notebook. I googled for that info with little success. I found the torquing data and a guide to tell me what each number in the engine code ment but no parts list. Still would like to find specifications stating capacities, idle speed, max RPMs, HP and working torque information. phil
John_RI 8 Posted May 22, 2007 Hi Phil, Here's an eBay listing for "Service & Repair Instructions" for the older briggs. I have it and I think it will have all you are looking for. You should be able to get one for around $5 with shipping less than $5. http://cgi.ebay.com/Briggs-and-Stratton-Service-and-Repair-Instructions-84_W0QQitemZ170113820756QQihZ007QQcategoryZ50371QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Good luck & welcome to the club! Ketchamized 2 Posted May 22, 2007 Phil, No problem, glad to be able to help. :) For future reference, you can return to that page and type in the engine number on the far top right corner on the briggs site and it'll show engine illustrations for that model. The briggs front page: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/ The briggs picture/parts list manual page: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/display/router.asp?docid=78484 Please note the search bar on the top right corner of the above link. wilm169 1 Posted May 23, 2007 If it is RED, It might be a replacement engine.
skunkhome 0 Posted May 23, 2007 The motor is black and at present I am detecting no problems what so ever. I am just building a library so that I can better understand the workings of the tractor. This is my first tractor since 1972. I knew my way around my ole B-10 pretty well as I used it "commercially" and was responsible for its maintenance as a teenager. If a question comes up I like the idea of going in and reading about it before I act in light of my decades' absence from the Simplicity design. I am currently looking at a huge repair manual which covers "all" models of briggs produced in the 60's toearly 80's.
