Removing steering wheels

Has anyone tried to remove a steering wheel on a Chalmer B212. I see that under the wheel there is a small lock. Do you need a special device that is specific to the tractor OR is it an allen key? I need to get it off to get the rest of the panels off so I can sent them off to get painted. Any help????

It's an allen key, Loosen and tap upwards with a rubber hammer. They are on pretty tight and may take some time but it will come off.

Adam, I use a pulley puller to remove the steering wheel. It works so much better than a rubber hammer or a hammer in my honest opinion. With those that has plastic around, make sure you use some kind of metal backing to protect the plastic from damage.

I was able to get the allen key lock out today and i tried using the rubber hammer to loosen it, but that didnt seem to work at all. It seemed to be rusted or stuck in place. I got some penetrating oil and sprayed that in there to hopefully loosen the rust up. If it is rusted together, will the pulley puller still work?

If its a metal steering wheel I agree with Ketchamized, use a puller. If you still have problems try the blue wrench.

The B212 has a plastic steering wheel on a metal steering column. Will the pulley puller damage the steering wheel????

The puller will not damage the steering wheel if you put something in the back of the steering wheel. Perhaps I would suggest you buy 2 big washers that's thick, and big enough to cover the whole of the back of the center of the steering wheel... Use a disc cutter, cut the washer in half. Put the 1st washer behind the steering wheel and tape the halves together. Put the 2nd washer on, except make sure it doesn't line up with the 1st. place the teeth on the metal washer and slowly pull the steering wheel off. If not a washer, then use something metal that would act as a protective backing.

Years ago I had one on a 64 Landlord that would not bust loose. Pullers slipped off and even heat wouldn't work. Ended up slicing the collar with cutoff wheel and spread open to get off. I then just welded up the slice and re used it.

instead of removing the wheel could i just unbolt it from where it bolts to the rest of the steering unit under the hydro pump, and then unbolt all the panels and lift the whole unit with panels up and off?

Not without reomoving the "bulkhead" that holds the battery, hydrolift pump and gas tank also. That bulkhead has a tube on it (the "steering column") that the steering shaft runs through. The coupler on the lower end of the steering shaft, down at the steering gear, will not pass through the tube. The steering shaft is inserted into the steering column from the bottom... it won't come out the top. Basically, you'd have to remove everything but the engine to get it out that way... Once you've loosened the set screw and soaked the wheel and hub with penetrating oil several times, if you still can't get it off, try sitting on the tractor with your knees pushing up against the steering wheel (you may have to put your feet up on something). Push up so hard with your knees that you're actually beginning to flex the steering wheel -- then tap on the hub/shaft with a hammer... I've found that works better than a puller. But, then, I've also run across one that had set outside for years and was so rusted that I ended up sawing the steering shaft off, then put the steering wheel in a vice and drove the remaining piece out... Obviously I'd destroyed the shaft and it had to be replaced, but I was trying to salvage the steering wheel... The plastic steering wheel prevents you from using heat -- which is typically the "final trick" on the older foot-draggers...

I have learned over the years that the easiest way to remove the steering wheels on all the B series except the 110 and 112 is to drive the steering wheel down on the shaft below the key. Then pull the key out and turn the steering wheelon the shaft as you lift up and it will spin up and off. I use a piece of pipe to sit on the steering whel hub with a hole big enough to allow the shaft to go up and into it as you drive the wheel down. Works every time for me as long as I can get the set screws out. You cant do this procedure on the B -110 and B 112 becuse of the plastic spacer under the wheel. None of the other models have that spacer. Sam

I've already removed the gas tank, engine, front end, side panels, battery, hood. I thought since im trying to take everything off that it would be easier if i just unbolt the shaft and the i can remove the bulkhead - thats what i really want to do - i wanted to take the steering wheel off to get the bulkhead out so i can sand and paint. Is this this best way to go??
