Removing OLD Pulleys

Recommended Posts

I recently puchased a parts tractor on eBay (link below if interested) because I wanted to add the roto-tiller attachment to my Allis Chalmers T-816. Although the Simplicity 6116 in the auction is a little older, it's very close to my tractor and I'm pretty sure I can make the parts work. I paid a little more than I thought I'd have to, but in addition to the tiller, my tractor needs the lift kit, hitch kit and the rear PTO assembly...so I probably did okay given my specific needs. Anyway, I've removed everything from the 6116 except the transmission pulley and it looks like everything will fit my tractor without modifications. But now I'm finding it very difficult to get that pulley off. I think I need to swap with the pulley on the T816 because I need the second "power take off pulley" to run the rear PTO. It's hard to get in there for a good look, but it appears that on the 6116 the transmission pulley and that 2nd pulley are one unit. I'm hoping to pull it and swap it on the T816. It was attached with a little bolt (removed) and has the key on the rod and groove on the pulley. I think the only thing holding it on now is time and grime? I trying heating it with MAPP gas and prying it off and I'm wondering if I should continue down that route or if somebody has a better method? So far I haven't bent or damaged anything, but before continuing I thought I'd turn to the experts. The process will need to be repeated on the T816, but I'm not touching that tractor until I get some advice. Thanks!

Barry, first off let me welcome you to the forum. There are many ways to remove a pulley, but it's tough to describe whats best for your case not being able to see just what your up against. Cleaning the shaft to a nice smooth shine and lots of good penetrating oil are always needed. The use of the proper pullers and heat are often the solution. You might possibly look at swapping the entire tranny as an option as well. Let us know how you come out. We look forward to seeing you participate in the club, but I have edited you link out as non dues paying members are not allowed to post pictures or links.
