Weak Reverse, Vickers Hydro

Recommended Posts

I finely got my 3416H running using an external coil setup. (I'll post details with pictures and details when I find my digital camera) The tractor runs great and seems to have plenty of power. The Vickers hydro works great in forward, but I noticed that it doesn't like to back up too easily if I have a load, or I'm trying to back up a hill. I adjusted the linkage and can't do too much more with that, or it will creep. Is there an adjustment on the hydro pump that would give a little more power to the reverse gear? It looks like there might be adjustments on the top of the pump, but I don't want to touch anything unless know what's going on. Anyone have any advise?

Sounds like a weak high pressure relief valve on the reverse side of the high pressure circut. If you have good forward you should have good reverse also.

A weak high pressure relief valve huh, very interesting. I was thinking it was something like that since the forward is so strong. How would I go about adjusting or repairing this? Is there any helpful information or posts on this site? Thanks for the input

A parts breakdown in a repair manual will show you the location and component breakdown of the pump assembly. Maynard and Greg are our resident experts on manuals. They can help lead you in the direction of the proper manuals.

HI, With a hydro, if one direction works well, normally the problem is external. The hydro doesn't care which way it goes as the only thing different is the stroking of the pump. The exception to this is on some of the newer hydros that do not have charge pumps and have check valves. If one of the check valves stays open, you will have NO forward or NO reverse depending on which check valve is inoperative. On these old tractors, the most common problem with weak reverse is that the pump isn't getting stroked enough. Usually the little link with the 2 ball joints in it has a lot of play in it. Also the pins in the linkage at the inside of the shift lever get worn. Drilling out the lever and link to the next over size pin will help remove some slack. Do not drill the holes for clearance, use the pin size exactly. Also wear pump case at the pintle shafts in the front of the case can affect this, even if the wear isn't bad enough to cause the ever so common leak yet. Once you get the cumulative wear out of the system it should work well. They never did have a very fast reverse, compared to newer tractors. Good luck, Al Eden
