perry 1 Posted June 10, 2007 been working on my buddys 14HP K321 KOHLER. we set the points gap at 20 and started it up. it had the kohler rattle sound to it. so i set the timing with a timing light and the points gaped out at 14 with the SP mark centered in the timing hole. the tractor seems to run better and there is no more spark knock / rattle noise. is it ok to run the points at 14 gap?. and what would cause such a low gap?. most kohlers i have come across run about 17-22 point gap. 14 just seems low. MrSteele 482 Posted June 10, 2007 Still on topic, but it doesn't sound like it. I have a 78 Harley Sportster, the points are supposed to be set at .035 Mine runs best at around .028. Now, should I set them at 'factory specs' and adjust the carb accordingly to get approximately 32 MPG, or leave them as they are, and leave tha carb alone, so that I get some over 50 MPG? Set the points where the engine runs the best!
maxtorman1234 0 Posted June 11, 2007 I have had to set a few around 14, havent had a problem, but you are right the rattle is reduced when timed properly, i wouldnt worry about it, if the engine has alot of hours, possibly the points lobe/plunger could be wore and effecting the gap.
