haykarenhardy 6 Posted August 23, 2007 Purchased spare B&S model 326431-0190-01-7703041 16 hp from club member. Was converted to kohler coil. Motor had hard cold starting and charging system trouble. I want to bench test motor before putting it in a tractor. I have a B&S engine manual coming on Friday, have not worked on coil ignition or generators for some time and then only on cars and trucks. Removed coil to re-mount and found "use with primary resistance wire or external resistor" does this mean it is not a kohler type coil? Also when converting to battery ignition do you keep the small condenser mounted with the points in the point box and add a auto condenser to the coil?? Carb issues, the motor has a idle adjustment on carb, pinned to the throttle shaft and has lots of play on the adjuster, and some in the shaft. Do I rebuild the carb or try J-B weld and re-drill the adjustment part, don't know the proper name for it. Stan
HubbardRA 20 Posted August 23, 2007 One condenser only!! You can use the original one that is mounted with the points, as I did. That is not a Kohler coil for this type ignition. It will work, but the points will burn very quickly, since the voltage thru them is higher without the resistor. You can add a Chrysler ballast resistor in line with the power lead to the coil. Post a picture of the carb so that we can understand the adjuster problem. It is not clear to me.
haykarenhardy 6 Posted August 23, 2007 The coil did not have a stock bracket, one other post said the coil should have a coil bracket to hold it tight, I may put a new coil on and not take a chance. Hope the photo helps. Stan
