potatoe plow

There was a discussion a little while ago about a potatoe plow and I mentioned I had one that was made for an allis Chalmers 416S that my father-in-law had made when he bought his allis new. I have it now and plowed my pitiful potato patch this afternoon. Here is the plow in case anyone is interested in it:

I didnt get enough potatoes to bother with. The tops all died a couple weeks ago. I guess it got to dry this summer. I could have bought taters cheaper. ddh

To be honest I don't think you can grow potatoes on a small scale as cheap as you can buy them regardless, but they are really a lot of fun to grow especially for the youngsters.

When I was a kid, we had a 'family' patch. It was pretty big. I remember granddad bust the hills, and us kids running behind with buckets to pick the potatoes. we usually got a couple pickup truck loads. Which would then be sorted, small, large and cuts. Large potatoes went to the cellar in the potatoe bin and had lime sprinkled on them. Small ones got canned, cuts got cooked pretty quickly. Our family consisted of Mom, dad, me and my brother, Aunt/Uncle and 2 cousins, Aunt/Uncle no kids, and Grandma/Grandpa. There was always enough potatoes to go through the entire winter, and we ate a lot of potatoes. So I guess your right, probably cant produce enough on a small scale. Work doesnt increase that much to the larger scale. Still got to weed, hill and dust to keep the darn potatoe bugs off. This was an experiment. Dont know If I will repeat next year or not. ddh

All yea, Granny and plow did an excellent job. The plow originally came from the farm my father in law grew up on. He had the shop he both the allis modify it so it would fit his tractor. I had to change the piece that goes from the lift to the plow, his allis is taller. ddh
