After uncovering the engine out of the 3012V to install in my project restoration "3012H" I noticed it has two bumps on the head. I then noticed it had no tin accross the head unlike the other 12's I have. I tried to read the numbers on the shroud and they are none existant but it looks like there was a paper label there at one time. My question is how might one tell what this engine is by just looking at it? what features the block might have to give it away? The block height is about 13 7/8" from pan gasket to head gasket. I have the receipts from the P.O. that shows what parts were ordered, Crankshaft 261218, rod-299632, gasket set-299719.

OK after going through the manual and papers I got with it some more I found a short block IPL sheet. Short block H-320 (393870) to be used on engine model series 301430,302430,325430,326430,300430,320430. So what is it really?? The parts ordered match this IPL.

12hp is flat all the way a cross cylinder diameter is 3 7/16

14hp and 16hp have the hump on the 2 fins cylinder diameter is 3 9/16 Can you post a picture of a cylinder head? The number on the shroud is real small but right about even with the top of the tractor frame on the carburator side of the engine. I haven`t seen a shroud yet that didn`t have one.

Cleaning the shroud I found the original numbers, 300421 0127-01 6803221, stamped in it but now know that ain't what it is. It was a short block and am hoping a 32 cube one because of the short block number H-320. Hoping someone can shed some light on this.

Sounds like this tractor got a new short block at some point. I can't shed any light on the H-320 number but I can tell you that the briggs engines 13 hp and above have the 2 raised fins ; ie 13,14,15 and 16 hp.

OK, Here are some pics. It was my understanding that the higher hp of the certain cube engines had the two hump head ei: the 13 of the 30 cube and the 16 of the 32 cube. I have a 15hp out of a 3415 in need of a rebuild and it also has the humps, but I was told there really wasn't a 15hp they are the same as a 16hp. 12hp is a low compression head 13hp the high comp head, 14hp the low compression head and 16 the high comp head. I also heard there was a medium head but ??. I would really have to look at part numbers before I could determine anything. The IPL I found for this short block shows that it came with the head and tin for the head. Figure the old head tin would not have worked.

12 and 13 HP engines are 30 CID and the difference can be from better carburation or full load speeds, my thinking the former over the latter. One HP generally won't be noticed unless you are comparing it to a like machine and I would have a hard time. 14, 15 and 16 HP engines are 32 CID and the above note applies to this series. Carbs might be different but the rest of the parts are basicly the same. I have a 3112 with 48" deck and 916 with the same deck and unless you are knee deep in grass or the snow is always auger deep, you can't tell that much of a difference between a 12 or 16 HP engine.

I have determined that it is definitly a 32 cube engine because the piston and rod listed in the IPL is the same as the 16hp IPL I have. The head is the same P/N also so I'm going to call it a 16hp engine and going to have to rename my project a 3016H. OK??

I would say its a 15 or 16. Its not a 12, 13, or 14. I've never seen a 15 but I would say a good way to spot the 16hp is the 3 headbolts on the magneto side are short and the tin goes over the headbolts rather than underneath them, as you can see in Ray's picture. My 12, 13, and 14hp engines all have had the longer headbolts with the tin under the bolts.

Hello glad I got on this site. I hope to upload a couple of photos of my Simplicity Broadmoor
Model 707 Tractor. I have replaced all the belts on it and installed a new ignition switch.
Have a mower deck which was in poor shape , repaced a couple of bushings and welded the
deck where there was some holes. The tractor and mower deck came from a friend and the
mower deck metal was getting pretty thin. Some new metal was put in it and we also undercoated the underside of the deck. This was done by my friend Greg Toulman.
I have not put the mower deck on the tractor yet, waiting for Greg to come home and give me a hand. Can you please tell me if there is a manual for the mower deck and where I could get one.
I would also like to get some moon wheel discs as well.
I will try and down load some photos of the tractor when my wife shows me how to.
I really love driving this tractor and also how well it is made compare today's tractors, especially the flexible rear end and the rollers.
      Tell the next time
      Paul
