Battery Cable Size

My 7016 Sovereign with the 16 hp Briggs should have some new battery cables. What size should they be given the amperage requirements of the starter/generator? The ground cable on it now is a lot smaller than the other cable which doesn't make much sense since they both need to carry the same amperage and length is not that different. Want to have then large enough to work well, but no need to get them too big and waste money. Thanks in advance.

I would match the the larger cable to be safe. It doesn't mention cable size anywhere that I am aware of and I am guessing your larger cable to be a #2 size. The runs are fairly short and I don't think the cranking amperage is much over 75. The charging side is roughly 8-10 amps.

I have #10 wire for cables on one of my tractors and haven't had any problems. If the engine starts like it should, you will not overheat this size cable. It will easily carry the charging load.
