helicoil

I have have completely stripped threads on the spark plug on the Briggs 10 in my 2010. AutoZone sells a helicoil kit with the thread tap, the heli coil and the helicoil install tool. I think I have to drill the hole out first with an appropriate size drill, not supplied. At the helicoil website they give info on what drill size to use for what size hole. My plan is to coat the drill bit with heavy grease to capture the metal shavings and do the repair on the engine without removing the head. I have no experience doing this before. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

The kit for the spark plug hole should be a step tap and no drill is required. The first step threads into what is left of the old threads and is slightly oversize to grab, this pulls the second step in which reams the hole to the corect size and taps the hole for the heli coil insert. Heavy grease on the tap flutes will catch most of the chips. After tapping blow out with compressed air then turn the engine over with the starter to blow out any remaining fine chips. install heli coil install plug and start and run.

Do yourself a favor and put green loctite on the insert when you install it. I have seen more than one of these come out with the plug after it was installed.
