63/64 Landlord

Storm showed us a round hood Landlord he acquired recently on eBay. The model number on his, in the picture shows it to be a 990314. There is a 990314 for sale on craigslist in RI. I checked the Manufacturer # and 990314 is a 63/64 Landlord with manual start. The 63/64 Landlord had a 9 horsepower engine. My question is, what is this engine, is it the 23D? Here is a listing of Briggs cast iron engines, by year: * 5 (cast iron) (1950---1957) * 5S (cast iron; suction carburetor) (1949---1957) * 6 (cast iron) (1952---1957) * 6S (cast iron; suction carburetor) (1949---1957) * 8 (cast iron) (1949---1957) * 9 (cast iron) (1949---1962) * 14 (cast iron) (1948---1963) * 19 (cast iron) (1957---1965) * 19D (cast iron) (1963---1965) * 23 (cast iron) (1949---1957) * 23A (cast iron) (1956---1965) * 23C (cast iron) (1961---1963) * 23D (cast iron) (1963---1965) * 191400 and 193400 (cast iron) (1965---1966) * 200400 (cast iron) (1966---1974) * 231400 (cast iron) (1965---1966) * 233400 (cast iron) (1965---1991) * 243400 (cast iron) (1965---1991) * 300420 (cast iron) (1966---1971) * 301430 (cast iron) (1971---1972) * 302430 (cast iron) (1972---1977) * 320420 (cast iron) (1969---1971) * 325430 (cast iron) (1971---1972) * 326430 (cast iron) (1972---1991) Looks like 23D is the only answer for what Briggs came in a 63/64 Landlord, correct? Next question: is it good news when you find a 23D in your Landlord or no? Is this engine feasible to service and use hard? I know one difference is that Briggs did not begin synchro balancing their cast iron singles with crankshaft counterweights until 1966. Lastly, the seller of Storm's 990314 Landlord said it has a 12 horse Briggs in it. That would hopefully indicate that the 23D in the 63/64 Landlord can be swapped out for a 1966 or later 12 horse.

I believe the 23D is the original, many are still running, many have been rebuilt. They are tough - how many other 63 engines are still in use? Many owners have also changed to 10, 12, 14 and even 16 HP B & S with little difficulty because the bases often have the same bole layout and outside dimensions are manageable - it's often cheaper than rebuilding an engine if you can replace with a good working one.

A 23D is the only engine that came in a 63-64 landlord. I had a 9hp 23D in my landlord for years, and it served me well. I did replace the rings and rebuild the carb, but that is all I ever had to do to it. It's now sitting on the floor of the parts shed, as I replaced it with a nice 16.:D It's now going into my 725 that I have, but that is another story. Oh BTW, in the future, you mite want to leave out the location of a possible score, as there are several of us in southern New England. Some have been known to be snipers!!!!!:O}:):o):D I'm not far from RI so let me know if I can be of assistance.

All I have done to my 23D in the LL is reset the valve stem length when I first got as that was the cause of no compression. That's been 4 or 5 years ago and I work that tractor hard. No oil use and fires right up, plenty of hp to do anything the tractor is big enough to do. Maybe a mower deck, with leaf vac in tall grass would over work it:D

Wow! Elon, you put a 16 Briggs in a '64 landlord? You are justly famous for mechanical marvels (whatever happened to that itsy bitsy diesel you grafted into a Baron?). I am just trying to help this guy out. I don't know, but it kind of looks like this fellow bought his first Simplicity and not only are the implements missing but the mule drives for the mower and the rear pulleys and mule drive are all gone. The only pulleys are on the bgb and the transmission. I think maybe there was no gear lube in the transmission because it blows and he spends $350 to have it fixed and now wants to sell. I got him to find the engine numbers on the tin and it turns out the engine is a 1968 243431 which helps a little. If he is to sell it for much I think it helps to describe what's left accurately.

Thanks for the kudos, but there are far too many, better suited individuals, who have done mechanical marvels, for me too take that status.

The seller emailed me and has a mule drive, he thinks for the mower deck. The rod for the rear lift is missing. I think the seller may be a very young man. I gave him the link to our classifieds and urged him to register. The tractor does sound like it might be something good, not junk. I suggested to the seller that he needs to get a digital camera and get some pics.

Hi Elon, I dunno, that diesel repower is a very astonishing marvel. I would like to see a YouTube video of it running. Did it turn out to have plenty of torque for running implements?

First, sorry for editing your post. I clicked the mouse too quickly. As for the power of the diesel, I haven't used it yet, as soon as we get some snow, I'll know.

Mine is a 23D. The guy was wrong on eBay, but someone send the right info to him and he put it in the Q&A's at the bottom of the page. It also as the electric start and it looks to be original, or at lest there for a long time..... Oh, you know maybe added sometime in the 70's or 80's.lol

My 63/64 Landlord's model 23 was a real workhorse. I don't know how long it sat before I replaced the coil and put it into service. It's demise I surmise by postmortem examination was the the govenor as the con rod was free on the crank and at the piston, the oil pan full. To answer the original question the 23 is a 9hp and was I believe the only engine in the early Landlord until the 101. And yes it can be swapped for almost any of the CI Briggs engines.
