Before you decide to "just" put rings in it, you should remove the head and check the condition of the cylinder. A significant ridge at the top, or a scored cylinder will require that it be re-bored before putting in a set of oversized rings. Kohlers have the tendency to score cylinders. I have two Kohler engines that smoke some. Fortunately both of them have smooth, shiny cylinders, with no ridge at the top. A good honing and a set of rings is all that they need.

Also check for valve/valve guide wear. While you have the head off, turn engine till each valve comes full up. If you can see/feel much side play at all, then you need new guides & valves also. Worn guides cause a lot of smoke by themselves.
