1991 Sovereign

Maybe have a chance to buy a 1991 Sovereign. I have heard people mention bad things about the 17 hp two cylinder Kohler. Is that the engine in this tractor and if so, what exactly is bad about it? What would be a fair price for this tractor? Comes with chains, weights, blower, mower, tiller and plow. Thanks in advance.

Dan, I have this exact machine, purchased 3 months ago. I paid $1300.00 for the tractor, deck, snowblower, weights and chains. The tractor was in prestine condition. I'm no expert, but I believe the kohler issue was with the early design, and the lack of a pressurized oil system. If this has the kohler "Series II" (which should say right on the engine.) it should be good. Good luck, if it's in good shape you won't regret it. Greg

I personally would be around the $1000 price range. And that would depend on the condition of the equipment. I have two machines with the 17 KT type motor in them and they work well. Make sure youi have a fuel shut off in line and check oil frquently. That model could also have the 18 hp motor and think that is a different animal altogether

The Kohler KT 17 is the motor with an oil splash system, so when it is used on a slope, the engine will blow. The KT17 series two has an oil pump, so the driving on a slope is not a problem. The series two is marked on the engine serial number. I hope this helps. jh

Does the engine with the oil pump also have an oil filter on it? Would be easy to tell apart then.

Dan my 1991-2 17GTH-L with the KT17 seriesII does not have an oil filter. Don't think that was standard but if you look on the right side of the engine you can see the block-off plate where a filter bracket or remote filter plate hooks up. Right above that is a test port for a pressure gage. I have over 900 hours on mine and still runs smooth. Larry
