joebarron 0 Posted January 2, 2008 Hi All, I was driving my 3416H Sovereign out of the garage to do some snow blowing when it stopped about a foot out the door. I lifted the seat to take a look. I can see the axle tube on the left is turning, that is about 4 inches out of the housing. The outer part of the axle does not move, nor does the right turn. What can this be? Help, Thanks, Joe
D-17_Dave 12 Posted January 2, 2008 Sounds like you have a problem in the differential section of the axle. This is the small gearbox inboard of the right rear wheel. You may have a sheared key, a broken gear, or a snap ring might have come loose and let the axle slide sideways allowing the sun gear to disengage. But the diff. will still have to come apart. I can't remember the exact breakdown but you can pull the wheel off and disassemble the differential and see what's bad.
Willy 2 Posted January 2, 2008 Joe Check the axle coller on the left side of your axle I've had mine come loose and the axle will slide out of the diff far enough so gears won't mesh. Good luck !!
4xbill 2 Posted January 2, 2008 I'm with Willy. That happened to me a few weeks ago on my 3112h. The collar came off and the axle just spun. Fortunately the collar was sitting in the rim. Easy fix. Hope yours is the same.
joebarron 0 Posted January 2, 2008 Where is this collar (which side), and is it visible from the side of the wheel? Thanks, Joe quote:Originally posted by 4xbill I'm with Willy. Willy 2 Posted January 2, 2008 The collar I was referring to is around the axle on the left side as you set on the tractor. If you jack your tractor up and push the wheel back until the axle is where it should be. Then look on the left side and see where the collar is setting it should be up tight agents the axle tube. If it isn't then loosen and slide it over and tighten. Hope thats what is , good luck
MPH 12 Posted January 3, 2008 You stated the axle tube turns on the left side of the tractor, does it also turn on the right side between the tranny housing and the diff hub, where the grease serk is?

No, just on the left.
Willy 2 Posted January 3, 2008 Whoo back to the drawing board. Sounds like a broken axle tube. Time to get you fingers greasy.
MPH 12 Posted January 3, 2008 "Whoo back to the drawing board. Sounds like a broken axle tube." Yep, sounds just like my 3314 was. Bet it's broke inside right where the snap ring goes around:(. New parts your looking in the 150 dollar range if I recall right
joebarron 0 Posted January 3, 2008 I think you are correct. The collars were all in place. I removed the right hub. I didn't see anything broken on the right side traction device (donut shaped housing). The axle shaft is ok. Just no connection between the axle tube and the axle shaft. :( If that's true then will I need part# 166066 ? http://www.simplicitytechpubs.com/6767PRINT/PDF_files/TP_400_1359_00_SV_S.pdf
Willy 2 Posted January 3, 2008 Yup that's it. You might check someone may have an assembly you could pick up cheaper than the tube ,gasket ,bushings and seals.
