You can buy a Briggs antique engine repair manual that covers this engine plus a whole lot more. I think it is around $20. You can get it from their website or your local dealer or Briggs service center. Could be your starter/generator (used $50 and up). If regulator, about $35. Or maybe not either. Bad running problems could be alot of things. Try searching this discussion group for "power", "backfire" "governor" etc. Manual may help. Brent

I had to replace the gov asy on my 12 hp B/S when it hung up like you describe. I removed & polished it 1st but that didn't help. Bill

NEED ADVICE ON IMPROVING PERFORMANCE. RUNS, BUT NOW, IN WINTER, IS BACKFIRING A LOT, AND IN SUMMER, GOVERNOR STOPS WORKING WHEN ENGINE IS HOT. LOSES POWER UP HILLS, ETC. ENGINE IS ORIGINAL BRIGGS 16HP 1 CYL. HAS BEEN REBUILT A COUPLE OF TIMES IN HISTORY BY PREVIOUS OWNER. CAN I GET A MANUAL ON THIS SPECIFIC ENGINE? ALSO, CHARGING SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK. COULD BE REGULATOR, BUT WHERE TO GO FOR HELP? IF ANY HELP IS OUT THERE, RETURN A MSG, OR EMAIL ME. THANKS.
