Hello, out mowing & stopped to turn & she wont go. Got off & lifted the seat pan & can see the axle tube (I think)on the left go forward & backward but not on the right side it stays still. Axle itself that the hub is bolted to on the left does not turn either, put hand on rear tire & you can feel in the rotation that something just barely snags.

Sounds like snapped axle tube. Better get one ordered so you can get back to mowin.

Check out the keys in the differential.

If the tube is turning on one side and not the other you have a broken axel tube. The last one I bought was 104. buck and that was several years ago you may be able to find a replacement rear end cheaper and a lot less work. Good luck Willy

Thanks fellows, I was hoping other than the tube that's not what I wanted it to be.

Sounds just my my 3314 was, broken tube inside where the snap ring is groved into the axle tube, a weak point. I got a new one from SLI, 150ish bucks.

I heard that the "complete rear end swap" was easier....and it was. Here is a link with lots of good tips from our members. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=93612&SearchTerms=swap

Before replacing the entire rear, you should check to make sure that the collar with the set screws on the left side axle has not slipped. If it slips to the left, it will let the axle move to the right and disengage the gear on the right side hub from the diff spyders. It has happened to me. To fix this all you have to do is lift the rear wheels off the ground, push the right side wheel as far to the left as it will go, then go to the left side and pull the left wheel as far out as you can. Look behind the wheel and you will see clearance between the collar and the end of the outer tranny tube. Loosen the set screws and push the collar against the tranny tube then tighten the set screws. This will re-engage the gear as long as you have no broken teeth. I have also sheared the keys that hold the left wheel gear to the axle. To check this you will have to pull the right side hub off. These are both easy fixes that do not require replacement of the entire tranny and axle assembly.
