Hood vs. overheating

Both my hoods and most of the pictures I've seen of the PowerMax/4041 type tractors show signs of overheating in the muffler area. Also after mowing for 4 hours in 85 degree heat the hood was too hot to touch. Is there ANY reason not to just take the hood off when it's working that hard? I would think that would let the heat from the muffler escape instead of being cooped up in that confined space.

The guy I bought a 4040 from a while back told me he left the hood off when mowing his lawn in the middle of summer. I never ran it hard enough to have to do it. You would think it would let the heat out.

A member here put a 12 volt fan in the grill blowing out to get rid of a lot of heat.

I took the hood off and put a deflector behind the muffler so that should help. I've thought about a fan, pulling air forward seems backwards to me, but I guess since the engine is in there backwards it really isn't. Maybe the best idea would be to get the muffler out of there.

my kid cut the louvered section out of an old Murray hoood and weleded it into the hood on his 9020 . Seems to help let the excess heat out.
