I was grading and the tractor came to sputtering stop. I located a loose wire in the area of the starter and solenoid. I have tried the wire to the opposite post of the solenoid but the starter just runs and does not engage. There are currently three wires attached to the solenoid are one from the positive battery, one other to that same post, and then one from the solenoid to the starter. Also the oil light came on before when you put the key in the run position but no longer does. Can someone tell me where to hook this wire to?

It is a 1972 616. It is not a power max.

He was asking if it is a pow'r max or not.

The small 616 tractors were model years 1985/86 and they didn't have an oil light.

Kelly: I have a 616 and I use a manual for the Simplicity 4040 that is almost identical. I will attempt to post the wiring diagram here. If it doesn't work I will try to add it to my picture gallery next. It appears that the 3 wires in question should be the battery positive and the yellow to the circuit breaker on one post and a wire ground strap to the starter on the second one. There is a tab also that connects to a white wire that appears to go to through the safety switches. In the diagram it's shown going to the transmission neutral switch in the rear, probably through the bundled wiring harness.

I pulled the engine the wire is on the bottom of solenoid. So this is the only way to get to it. Thanks everyone for your help. I will change the oil tomorrow and get back to work.
