Cone Clutch Grinding

My new 1999 sovereign has this problem. When you depress the clutch it grinds, pto not engaged. The last time this subject was discussed, it was suggested that the bearing was dry or shot from sitting. Yesterday I had time to find out.

This is the inboard side of the bearing. Notice the out of round machining on the inboard side. Also the bearing was spinning inside the coneclutch housing. I'm pretty sure this is my problem. Anyone care to concur?

This is he outboard side. Hopefully I can replace this part and be back in business.technically this tractor is under warranty, I just sent the warranty papers in, I'm pretty sure this will be on my dime though.

Notice the surface rust on the rear end of this brand new machine from sitting in a barn for 8 years. I'm going to tackle that issue now also.

Starting with the cone clutch assembly. I use rusty metal primer on everything, stuff is great.

This is a new bearing. The odd looking maching is for a locking collar used in a different application. If the bearing is spinning inside of the cone clutch pulley, you more than likely need to replace that. It is a tight fit once it is in the pulley. If it is still under warranty I would try to get the dealer to replace the pulley.

I have had problems and replaced two of those bearings. One was on my 716H and one was on my 713S.

Rod, did you have to press those bearings in? Thanks, Mike

They will drive right in with a hammer. If you have a socket or a piece of round pipe about the diameter of the outside diameter of the bearing.

I only put one of them in. The other was replaced with a used unit. I think it pecked right out with a hammer and I re-installed it the same way, just as Ray said. On both of mine the rough bearing ruined the thin steel sleeve that fits inside the bearing. The bearing fits snugly on the shaft when the sleeve is in place. This sleeve is pressed into the new bearing when you get it from the factory.

I ran the tractor today without the cone clutch installed. No noise when clutch depressed. It's gotta be that bearing.
