Why did this happen?

Well, I finally put everything back together on the 7014 and was stoked to fire it up. Well, turns out it wouldn't fire right up because the battery was weak. After a quick charge, I began to turn it over and heard a nasty sound. Turns out the gear stripped on the starter. What would have caused this? I hooked the battery up on the correct terminals so it is not turning backwards. I don't want to do it again. I have a dealer local that will replace the gear but I want to save the embarrassment of going up a second or third time. Please advise.

If its a plastic gear than just buy like 4 of them when you go up there, they are easy to replace and are only a few bucks

Plastic gears, and steel flywheels, don't get along forever. Eventually, the plastic gives up the ghost. If you had hooked the battery up backwards, there would have been a rather large spark, to let you know of your error.
