no battery question

i play musical battery with the tractors as i dont have enough batteries. i know the tractors can be started with a pull rope off the BGB pulley. my question is; will they run with no battery in them? if so, should the ends of the battery cables be taped up to prevent a short? the tractors are all B series with B&S motors and starter/generators.

They should run fine. And yes tape up the cable ends so they don't short out.

Also, remove the wire from the F terminal of the generator. It will not try to charge then.

If the large V pulley on the engine flywheel (the one the starter-generator belt runs on) is notched for a rope it is MUCH easier to start one using a rope on this pulley than the BGB pulley. Way more torque and speed and way easier on you. I know for sure the 16HP engine tractors with starter-generators were this way. Not sure about the smaller engined B-series but they probably are too. The drawback with this method is you must remove the SG belt or at least tie it out of the way in order to wrap the rope around the pulley. I had a Sim. 3416H years ago I started this way numerous times.

One more note. NEVER wrap the rope around your hand and use a rope just long enough to get the job done and no longer. Use a "handle" of sorts on the pulling end of the rope. One that can get yanked out of your hand, or just grasp the rope without wrapping. I dang near had a serious accident many years ago starting an old front tine tiller this way by wrapping too long a rope directly around the flywheel. Thank goodness it died when yanking my entire bod into the engine. Scared the heck outta me.

I use to jump start with a set of jumper cable 20 years ago, when local dealer wanted $300.00 for a starter generator. Not sure if you have a Rural King in your area but you can get a 22NF there for $42.00. Cheapest place yet that I have been able to find the correct battery.
