MadMike Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 New problem for me.... I have a '67 2012 and noticed yesterday while mowing that exhaust is coming out of my Air Cleaner. Teardown will begin tonight, any suggestions on what to look for aside from build-up causing the exhaust valve to not seat fully? Possibly a clogged muffler? Thanks for the help. MadMike
Chris727 Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Your valve breather may be clogged or dirty as well.
Kent Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 I'd second Chris's recommendation and check the crankcase breather before I pulled it and tore it down. It may be building up excessive crankcase pressure, which can show up in blown seals, smoke, etc. How's the oil level? These old Briggs will run and still do a lot of work with low compression -- typically you only need to rebuild them when they smoke so bad that you're tired of driving in the stink and smoke...
MrSteele Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 How about a third? Before I tore anything down, I'd check the crankcase breather or valve cover, whichever you have. Either is easily removed, washed thoroughly and replaced, most times with no cost other than solvent. If you are still having trouble, then I'd take the head off and check the valves for proper seating. I have gotten several used engines free, as the owner thought they were worn out. Just adjust the valves! That problem usually makes one shut down when it gets hot, though.
MadMike Posted July 23, 2008 Author Posted July 23, 2008 Breather! I should have thought of that. Teardown didn't start as planned, something more urgent came up as usual. Thanks for the advice. MM
