Re-power questions

This should open a bag of worms! I'm considering a re-power on my 7116H. I'm not totally satisfied with the rebuild on my Briggs. I’ve rechecked the counter balance timming and it is spot on and there is a rattle, I think rod, coming from the engine. The crank was well within spek for out of round and OD. It seems to run OK…… Just doesn’t seem quite right. What seems to be a popular re-power and what pitfalls should I look out for. I've done a little research and I'm just looking for opinions for those of you that have done this. I’m kind of leaning tword a Vangard because of cost but…………… Thanks! Ken

Miwlaukee craigslist has a lombardi diesel from a 7790, I would think thats about as much power as you can get? I think it was $400 bucks. Other than that I have seen people rave about al edens command 18hp repower kits for like 1500 bucks.

Ken, also check Small Engine Warehouse, they have kits also. www.smallenginewarehouse.com I would go with the Kohler CH18 or CH20.

Thanks, I checked out S.M.E. and they also have a "kit" with an 18 HP Vanguard with the engine mount plate and the adapter for the drive shaft. Doesn't come with an oil filter because of frame clearance issues. You could always mod the frame to fit one later or just make sure to change the oil like your supposed to! Heck, the original Briggs made it 29 years with out a filter. I remember now that Al had kits also. I'll check out his web site.
