gregc Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 You've got to be kidding. Some dealer, huh? Briggs part #298968 ARMATURE-MAGNETO.
tracktor312 Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 Thanks I called 3 differant places today all told me the same thing one lady actually told me I should just junk it and she could sell me a brand new tractor that is much better and more reliable. She said I could even purchase a warranty for 3 years. I asked her why I would need that if it was so reliable she said 3 years is a long time for a tractor. I told her this one is only 40 years old it should last another 40 she laughed and told me good luck and she will see me soon for a new one. thanks now with a part # I can search one down
Learning Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 The manual shows part number 298968 (before code date 81080100) and part number 398811 (After code date 81073100)
Chris727 Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 That is ridiculous, I'd complain to management at those shops! I have a recent briggs "popular parts, quick reference" catalog, the 243400 series is listed and so is the magneto.
andrewk Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Agreed. Any decent dealer should be able to find and order that coil, with no problems. There are a growing number of parts for these old engines that are becoming NLA, but the part numbers can still be looked up easily, especially if the dealer has a computerized lookup. It sounds like you need a new dealer, or at least a new parts person.
tec2484 Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Anyone of these club sponsors would be happy to get one for you. They all probably have one on the shelf. http://www.jackssmallengines.com/index.html http://www.sepw.com/ http://www.sandylakeimp.com/
