I picked up another 627 Yeoman with a 8hp Briggs in it that will not start . It has spark great compression and backfires through the carb. Any thoughts what to look for?

A partially sheared flywheel key.

Todd, Sure sounds like the key to me too. Only other thing might be if the gap between the flywheel and the coil somehow got moved. Steve

Flywheel key or possibly maladjusted points or a bad condenser

You don't need to have engine rebuilt because of loose valve seats unless there are other factors also.

After looking a model# found out it is actually a Model#990764 637. Now that I got it running I need to find a deck in all my parts and put it to work along with my 5 other yeomans
