Wood Chipper Blades-----

I am going to drive my limb chipper/ shredder off of my tractor crank. that will work fine. the chipper is an unknown brand that I resurrected-- new bearings/ paint etc. Now I am looking at the blade-- it is about 1/4 X 1.5 X 4.5 inches and it has a large crack. Mounted by 3, 3/8 diameter countersunk screws. Problem is that I cannot find a match as far as size or bolt up pattern-- from any manufacturer. I thought about making and heat treating my own blades plus a few spares. Has anyone ever made their blades like this in their backyard machine shop/ forge??? Thanks.

I would have your trusted local machine shop make you a couple. These blades need to be perfectly flat to match the shear bar. When I repaired the larger chipper with 2 blades one had come loose and dented the shear bar and one blade. I had my shop re-edge both blades and the shear bar returning all 3 components to original condition, replaced the bolts and full adjusted it all. I'm very pleased with the results. Don't skimp on something like this that spins a chunk of steel at such high RPM's and under such extreme conditions.

If you make, or have one made, use tool steel (maybe D2) and have the edge hardened and tempered to around 55 Rc.

Industrial woodchipper blades are known as knives. Don't know if this will help you find a match though... Neilo
